I couldn't reproduce the bug on 2.7.4, built from source:
$ ./configure; make
$ cd src
$ sudo ln -s /etc/manpath.config /usr/local/etc/man_db.conf
$ strace -o man-2.7.4.trace -s 1024 ./man -d man
