If the issue is merely between GNOME and non-GNOME browsers, maybe it's possible to extend the current sensible-browser algorithm to check for GNOME too. Right now, sensible-browsers checks the list in $BROWSER, then tries x-www-browser if $DISPLAY is set, and finally launches www-browser. We could request for it to check for GNOME and try a list of browsers or a gnome-browser alternative indeed.
