Hello, I managed to solve the problem without patching gdm.
It seems nscd is crashing. See debian bug report: http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=336310 After removing the nscd cache (/var/db/nscd), nscd no longer crashes and gdm lets me login again!
