AFAICT it's not masked, but simply disabled, at least on the Sid systems
where I installed erlang-base.

So it's not automatically started via systemd, but when another service
like ejabberd requires it, it is.

ejabberd.service contains:
 After=epmd.service network.target
 Requires=epmd.service

The only question that remains: what happens if other apps want to start
epmd? Is it always caught through epmd.socket and started via systemd or
is epmd then started again under an untrusted user?
