I believe it must have been something like: "ERROR 2002 (HY000): Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock' (2)". Isn't this saying: I can't reach the mysql server (this is the response from the mysql client when it can't reach the host? The problem is that we can't easily detect that this is exactly the problem (as I said, the mysql server may be running on a different host). But you agree with me that this is "only" improving the text in the error handling and not to improve the error handling itself? Maybe just add a not that maybe all you need to do is actually start the server (albeit it won't be at the top as you request). Paul
