Well, after speaking with upstream even they haven't been running ALSA
with it yet. So, I've done an upload into experimental (after
converting myself to use ALSA -- and finding a few bugs in esound).

Yup, it is the way of the future but it'll need brave souls like
yourself to test things out and confirm they are working for you.
If you could try out sweep in experimental (just add experimental into
your source list) and then do:
'apt-get install sweep/experimental'
And report any issues that arise.
