In xterm, do you see two dotted boxes when you do $ unicode U+200E; unicode U+200F Boxes not seen in emacs shell window. So maybe this is an xterm bug. Wait. See also https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=408835
