libavahi-compat-howl-dev ships a pkg-config file which is linked to
"howl.pc". This means that all pkg-config enabled programs will
automatically take notice of the compatibility layer. Gobby is one of
them.
In short: you have to add build-time dependency to
libavahi-compat-howl-dev and pass --with-howl to obby's and gobby's
configure script. And that's it.
Please note however, that the compatibility layer is only a short time
solution and is likely to go away very soon. We provide it as a
service for distributors to speed up the adoption of
Avahi. Unfortunately some people use the compat layers to write new
programs which is something we explicitly do not like. Hence we will
split the compat layers off into their own seperate pakcages around
Avahi 0.7 and drop them completely later on.
In short: a native Avahi binding for gobby is preferable and will
eventually be required for proper zeroconf support using avahi.
Thanks,
Lennart
