Meh, if you're going that way, you should rather be using
pkg-config. Either way it remains bash code, so you don't
really win something over what I suggested.

Checking for installed packages is a legitimate way on Debian
systems and other packages use this method as well, so I don't
think it's too bad.

Otherwise, I'd suggest just staying with the original method.
It's not that we have to update the list of architectures
so often.
