this is not much to go on. Please check your logs in /var/log/ejabberd/ as well as your configuration and provide both if possible. Are you e.g. using the pam plugin or the captcha script? Then note that ejabberd now places it's files the erlang-ish way in /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/ejabberd-16.01/ what used to be /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/ejabberd/ For that reason the captcha.sh will be moved to /usr/share/ejabberd/ with the next upload.
