Simulating the sourcing of /etc/default/<PACKAGE> by setting EnvironmentFile to it appears to have become common practice. Search "EnvironmentFile=\/etc\/default\/" at https://codesearch.debian.net/ Does this help with deciding this issue one way of the other? We currently override the .service file as follows (on Jessie): +EnvironmentFile=-/etc/default/varnish ExecStartPre=/usr/sbin/varnishd -C -f /etc/varnish/default.vcl -ExecStart=/usr/sbin/varnishd -a :6081 -T localhost:6082 -f /etc/varnish/default.vcl -S /etc/varnish/secret -s malloc,256m +ExecStart=/usr/sbin/varnishd $DAEMON_OPTS Hope this helps, Terry
