i don't fully understand the /etc/serial.conf
vs. /var/lib/setserial/autoserial.conf distinction, but i think the
reason the script was trying to bail might be this:
/etc/init.d/etc-setserial is responsible for working with the
canonical /etc/serial.conf, if such a file exists.
if such a file does not exist, then /etc/init.d/setserial should try
to work with /var/lib/setserial/autoserial.conf.
one consequence of this division of labor is that
/etc/init.d/setserial notices that /etc/serial.conf exists, it should
really bail and try to avoid doing its own thing.
does this analysis seem right to anyone? can anyone clear up what the
intended policy is?
