today while researching something for a user I found this gem in POSIX:

   -e  editor
          Use  the editor named by editor to edit the commands. The editor
          string  is  a  utility  name,  subject  to  search  via the PATH
          variable  (see  XBD  [8]Environment Variables). The value in the
          FCEDIT  variable  shall  be  used  as  a  default when -e is not
          specified.  If  FCEDIT  is null or unset, [9]ed shall be used as
          the editor.

I thought you might want to know, and revert your change to use ex(1).

I’m posting this to both old bugreports so the BTS archives contain
the complete discussion/information in case someone wonders about
