Type
  echo € | od -tx1
(of course you will not see the euro sign on your screen but the other
symbol).  If it displays
  0000000 e2 82 ac 0a
this means that your input is right but your font does not have this
symbol, you have to select another font (like lat0-sun16) in
/etc/console-tools/config.
