During a backport of the sope package, I noticed that clean target needlessly fails with some build-dependencies not satisified: The rules file includes a couple of GNUstep make snippets, and the clean target fails if those are missing even though it could succeed without them. The ability to clean without having build-depdencies fully satisfied makes it easier to build with pbuilder (and cowbuilder etc.) where the source is fetched and clean target executed outside of chroot, before copying source into chroot where build-dependencies are satisfied and the actual build takes place.
