Fred, Golang version 1.6 is now part of Debian, so , we don't need the gccgo in order to build docker.io for ppc64el anymore. Let's go with golang. The changes should be easier.
Could you please test docker.io build with golang other than gccgo? This will probably help the patch acceptance.
