You didn't accept to upgrade the config file 40xmltex.cnf. In this case
it was a shoot in the knee.
Do as root:
mv /etc/texmf/fmt.d/40xmltex.cnf.dpkg-new /etc/texmf/fmt.d/40xmltex.cnf
update-language
then it should work
