Although bug #795196 has not been closed , the latest version from upstream on Linux kernel 4.4 has no issues.
Savestates are not a reason for not updating the version, as it is not part of the package. Savestates, memory cards, etc can be remade on demand, and as such, are a non-issue. The last Debian changleog for this package is dated Fri, 15 Jun 2012. Nearly 4 years ago! Please upgrade the package.
