I don't know if this is suitable for this packet or if there is another solution. I debugged an issue with the boinc-client package where it couldn't get the cuda driver version using libnvidia-ml.so. It turns out I had to do 'ln -s /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/nvidia/current/libnvidia-ml.so /usr/lib/libnvidia-ml.so' in order to get the driver version because dlopen() couldn't find the so file. Now whereis libnvidia-ml.so also works.
