In the past, this has happened when STARTTLS negotiation failed, or the server used protocol extensions that were somehow incompatible. See for example https://bugs.debian.org/565581 - more detailed messages from the "xmpp_xml_console" would be useful to be able to debug this issue, also I'm unable to reach jabber.ipredator.se or create an account there, so different to Google talk this may be impossible to reproduce...
