I still have this problem with the latest version (1.6.3-2): my auth.log
file is flooded with messages.
There is indeed a patch available upstream:

However, this patch was submitted on March 17 and is not yet part of
version 1.6.3, which was released on January 1, 2016:

I verified this by checking file sshguard_logsuck.c in this archive:
http://http.debian.net/debian/pool/main/s/sshguard/sshguard_1.6.3.orig.tar.gz
And also the Debian sources do not contain this patch:
http://http.debian.net/debian/pool/main/s/sshguard/sshguard_1.6.3-2.debian.tar.xz
So my conclusion is that this bug has NOT yet been resolved in the
latest Debian version (1.6.3-2) of sshguard.
