The Debian matchbox packages are built to use libXft, which is looking for /etc/X11/XftConfig, which apparently doesn't exist on your system -- I don't think that should be a fatal error in itself, though. It looks like the problem comes for you when matchbox-window-manager fails to find any font matching 'Sans bold' (as requested by the theme file), so quits and ends the session. What's the output of 'fc-match "Sans bold"' on your system? (e.g. on my desktop it gives 'Vera.ttf: "Bitstream Vera Sans" "Roman"'.)
