I was told that scripts are meant to call `apt-get` not `apt` but it's
possible I was misinformed.
You weren't misinformed. :) See the "SCRIPT USAGE AND DIFFERENCES FROM
OTHER APT TOOLS" section in the apt(8) manpage.
