Ah, sorry, I (naively) assumed that all display managers run rootless by now. On my system I have gdm3 and lightdm installed, and but gdm3 is my default display manager. Maybe that is the issue here? randall@saito:~$ cat /etc/X11/default-display-manager /usr/sbin/gdm3 The package descriptions says it relies on lightdm, and there's a hard dependency on lightdm, but maybe that's not enough.
