Since Squeeze (or even earlier) I have MySQL set-up with 
symlink "/var/lib/mysql" pointing to another partition with data.

This configuration survived several MySQL (and Debian) upgrades until today
when I tried to install MySQL from jessie-backports that failed to upgrade 
"mysql-server-5.5" (5.5.49-0+deb8u1) as follows:

    cp: cannot overwrite directory ‘/var/lib/mysql-upgrade/DATADIR.link/mysql’ 
with non-directory
