I have lived with this same problem for about a month before discovering this packaging bug.
The Debian testing distribution still has these packages at version 1.10, which makes them non-working: mate-sensors-applet-nvidia mate-sensors-applet-common mate-sensors-applet libmate-sensors-applet-plugin0 After downloading the packages directly from the repository and installing them with dpkg, all is running now.
