Well, /cdrom and /dev/cdrom is not the same thing. AFAIR to read a dvd you need to access the device, but that could well be just for the css authentication. (If you copy the files to the hdd, you definetly only need to read the files, the same that are available in /cdrom.) I'll propably not be able to examine this with a dvd drive soon, so if you want to dig further, maybe you could ask for help with this bug. I'll also ask upstream whaat they think.
