Hi Michael, I installed systemd-sysv on my jessie testing partition so that I could gain some familiarity with systemd and init-select. Somewhere along the way, I accidently upgraded policykit from 0.105-8 to 0.105-15~deb8u1. As I was switching back and forth between systemd and sysvinit, I noticed that when systemd was active, the greyed out menus were no longer greyed out, and were now working properly - and at the next reboot using sysvinit - those same menus are still working properly. Back to my production jessie partition, with policykit 0.105-8 installed, along with sysvinit-core - menus are working properly. I installed systemd-sysv and init-select, deinstalling sysvinit-core. Over the next few days, I reboot a few times, alternating between systemd and sysvinit - then when sysvinit is active, I upgrade policykit from 0.105-8 to 0.105-15~deb8u1 - the menus are working properly. Note that I had submitted the original bug report after having upgraded policykit from 0.105-8 to 0.105-15~deb8u1 with sysvinit-core installed, and never having had installed systemd-sysv. Finally, I install sysvinit-core, and deinstall init-select and systemd-sysv, and then shutdown using the still working lightdm menus. Next morning, I reboot and the menus are again working properly. So it appears that this bug report can be closed, since the original problem no longer manifests. Thanks, -- Jeffrey Sheinberg
