Hi, mer's telepathy-ring moved from the unmaintained tonegend to their own ngfd [3452b328] in 2.4.0. tonegend was never available in Debian, but is in Ubuntu [ubn:tone-generator] with popcon-inst 537. telepathy-ring also is in Ubuntu [ubn:telepathy-ring] with popcon-inst 1540.
2.3.24 is the last tonegend version in mer's repo, which is much newer than 2.3.5 in fdo's repo. Which in turn is much newer than what's currently in Debian and Ubuntu. I think switching to mer's repo as upstream is reasonable, since fdo's repo is really dead. However, importing 2.4.x or 2.5.x from there as it is would require us to package libngf at least and might break working setups with tonegend, especially for Ubuntu users. Maybe it's possible to have two binary packages, one using tonegend via dbus and the other being linked against libngf for using ngfd. The actual work of supporting both through a build flag could possibly even be upstreamed. Maybe it's just not worth continuing to support tonegend, though.
