What happens if you explicitly export LESS=R ? Does that help? Try running the following in your terminal: /usr/bin/printf '\e[0;1;31mRED\e[0m' Does the word "RED" show up in red? Also try this: /usr/bin/printf '\e[2J' Does that clear your screen?
