I've still been having this issue pretty regularly (now again back to
several times per week, even with emacs24-lucid).
This time it's busy-waiting, and I took the time to attach gdb. The
stack trace is attached. It appears to be stuck in this loop in
xdisp.c:extend_face_to_end_of_line():
