So the issue here is actually due to the virtualization in use on our VPS servers. We use 'linux-vserver' on our VPS servers. Please note that one of the major disadvantages of the linux-vserver package is that many hardware related system calls, as well as /proc and /sys nodes are left unvirtualized. As these nodes and /proc filesystem entries are not correctly virtualized, calls to /proc will most likely result in an error, or erroneous results.
