It seems that xdg-open recognizes the file as text/plain . In the /usr/share/applications/mimeinfo.cache is the following line:
text/plain=libreoffice-writer.desktop;vim.desktop;org.gnome.gedit.desktop; and when I comment out the line, xdg-open fails to open test.c .
