It seems that older versions with eyed3 simply don't work with Python
2.4, but again, that's not a problem in Debian. (Only newer version
of eyed3 provide a python2.4-eyed3 package).
At least it seems to work well for me here with Python 2.3 and eyed3

Can you try to use _Debian's_ jack package, edit /usr/bin/jack and hardcode
python2.3 on the first line and let me know if it still fails with the old
eyed3. It certainly seems to work here.
