On my system, xscreensaver-demo does not actually save user-defined DPMS settings to ~/.xscreensaver, which makes it impossible for me to change the DPMS settings. This is what I am doing: 1. Using Gnome, I go into Desktop -> Preferences -> Screensaver. 2. When the window opens, I go into the Advanced tab. 3. I toggle the "Power Management Enabled" button, or adjust the timeouts. 4. I choose File -> Quit.
