FWIW, I tried to reproduce with upstream's thunderbird 45.5, and the behaviour doesn't occur. I copied my .icedove to .thunderbird and started icedove with -ProfileManager to create a new profile based on the existing folder inside .thunderbird. After selecting the newly created profile, I get prompted for the master password, but on the same screen.
