That was Debian 6 Squeeze's version of screen. I can no more reproduce
the bug on Debian Unstable/Testing, neither inside gnome-terminal
(where the glyphys look fine), nor inside uxterm nor urxvt (which both
only show placeholder squares instead of the expected glyphs).
Can you check if you still have this issue in either Debian Stable or
Unstable/Testing?
