For completeness: generation of SVG image also fails with the dvipng method but this time the convert command fails due to bug #350410. A quote from the answer to the bug report:
'While I claim write support for the svg
format, this is only true for input in Magick Vector Graphics (MVG)
format. Option -draw appears to be the only way to create MVG data.'
