CFLAGS etc. should be passed in via environment variables (so that dh_auto_build etc. work out of the box without an override), but that needs changes to upstream's Makefile. Once ondir has entered Stretch I plan on sending a pull request upstream that updates the Makefile, and to package a new version with a simpler debian/rules. Maybe that will even happen in time before the Stretch freeze, but that is unclear. Regards, Christian
