Regarding the solutions in the web post you referenced:
1. My system /usr/bin already has a link pointing iceweasel to icedove.
You mean /usr/bin/iceweasel -> /usr/bin/firefox-esr ?

Yes. Sorry for the typo. Link in /usr/bin is
iceweasel -> ../lib/firefox-esr/firefox-esr

There is no reason to configure this setting explicit to firefox. And
there is no reason to use a mimeTypes.rdf at all if the system defaults
are working. Icedove/Thunderbird is creating a new file if needed. So I
would try first to rename the existing mimeTypes.rdf so Icedove is using

Removing (renaming) icedove mimeTypes.rdf makes no difference. Same error persists.

You mean mozilla-thunderbird, not Icedove/Thunderbird? (My ~home has a .mozilla-thunderbird
config directory, but it is inactive; not accessed since 2013.)

the system defaults. Then you can add a single new rule for html to see
what is happen.

Please read also
http://kb.mozillazine.org/Actions_for_attachment_file_types
This file describes attachments. Have previously used (Edit : Preferences : Attachments : Incoming) to configure attachment handlers. Viewers for all attachments I typically get via icedove are working well.

http://kb.mozillazine.org/MimeTypes.rdf

This file describes mimeTypes.rdf for mozilla/firefox. firefox is working fine.

One interesting point is the first paragraph says firefox mimetypes can be configured using "Tools -> Options <http://kb.mozillazine.org/Menu_differences_in_Windows%2C_Linux%2C_and_Mac> -> Content / File Types -> Manage..." However, my firefox does not have a "Tools -> Options . . ." <http://kb.mozillazine.org/Menu_differences_in_Windows%2C_Linux%2C_and_Mac> Under Tools there is only "Downloads, Add-ons, Sign In to Sync, Web Developer, Pager Info"

Suspect is not relevant to the icedove problem (but am no expert.)

Because others are having this problem, it might be good to modify
the next icedove release to allow html http and https handlers to be
set or changed via menubar (Edit : Preferences : Attachments : Incoming).
Can someone on the icedove development team do this before the next
release?
No as this is user configuration side. There is no default configuration
without massive impact. This setting needs to be done by individual user.

Am at a loss as to what the problem is. html links in icedove used to work in the past, then stopped working after one of the previous icedove upgrades. Do not remember which version, but was 2 or 3 upgrades ago. Was hoping another upgrade
would fix it, but this has not happened.

Also have Chromium installed, but this browser is no longer operative at all. Will not even display a local (file:///) page. Do not really care because I always use firefox. Am sure Chromium used to work, so some upgrade must have broken
it too.

Upgrades can have consequences!

Anyway, have become very good at copying and pasting links from icedove to firefox for viewing email content. I can continue to do this indefinitely if necessary. No need to continue to pursue this further, but if you ever think of anything that might be relevant to this problem, please let me know.

Thanks very much for your quick responses and suggestions.
