When I try building openfoam under pbuilder (on amd64), with DEB_BUILD_OPTIONS="parallel=8", it swaps heavily. By running top I see at least about 30 cc1plus processes trying to run at the same time (it's hard to get an exact count since the swapping makes doing anything painfully slow). -- Daniel Schepler
