Hi, I was unable to reproduce any FTBFS errors with sbuild targeting stretch or sid recently.
I also saw that in recent build attempts from Reproducible builds team, they are succeeding in their first attempt but there are failures in their second attempt, when they modify the environment of the build. I intend to do source only upload of jruby the next time an upload is needed to see how it goes. This probably will happen post stretch release, unless a RC bug is reported and a fix must be uploaded.
