I'm also experiencing this bug (chromium 55.0.2883.75-3). The mentioned workaround works for me too. If it matters, my VGA card is:
03:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation GK107 [GeForce GT 740] (rev a1) And the video driver is nouveau (1:1.0.13-1+b1). -- Douglas A. Augusto
