It is completely non-obvious how to do so.  This is not documented
anywhere in Gimp as far as I can tell (which makes it a Gimp bug for
documentation at least), and there is certainly no visual indication in
the box itself -- which is what there really should be.

Keying in a filename does not work if one has clicked in the box
already.  It's also non-obvious that this will even work at all.

A simple note on the box that says "Start typing before clicking
anywhere to enter a filename" would satisfy me.
