Package: udev Version: 0.081-1 Severity: important Tags: etch Hi,
Because of the recent pcmciautils dependency on udev, I had to install udev. Bad surprise: /dev didn't get filled enough: bus cdrom cdrw console core disk dvd fd full gpmctl gpmdata hpet initctl input kmem kmsg log loop lp0 MAKEDEV mem net null port ppp psaux ptmx pts ptya0 ptya1 ptya2 ptya3 ptya4 ptya5 ptya6 ptya7 ptya8 ptya9 ptyaa ptyab ptyac ptyad ptyae ptyaf ptyb0 ptyb1 ptyb3 ptyb4 ptyb5 ptyb6 ptyb7 random rtc scd0 sg0 shm sndstat sr0 stderr stdin stdout urandom xconsole zero I.e. missing tty, tty0, hda*, etc, hence making the system mostly unusable (neither gpm, xterm, getty, etc. would work then). Information after signature is from that unusable state. A mere reboot makes things work again, but I guess no reboot should be needed. And indeed, doing just the same (fresh install) with the current unstable version (0.084-3) worked fine: /dev got populated as expected without any need for a reboot. I don't know if this issue is known and we just need to wait for 0.084-3 to propagate to sarge, but I'd say that this propagation should be done ASAP, since for now installing the current testing version just makes my system unusable until reboot. This is reproducible on my machine, so if you can't reproduce it, I can investigate.
