Upgrading to stretch left me with samba down as a standalone server for supporting our last Win-7 box The symptom was that the win machine kept asking for a password - nothing in the logs hinted to the situation. After a very long day, I found A default setting "NTLM auth" had changed from "yes" to "no" in 4.5. This change was probably a 'good thing'(tm), but without a bug report google was not helpful.
