Indeed the problem is worse during debian-installer, where less is not available. And if you need to manually partition a GPT disk you will encounter this problem in a rather inconvenient moment. When happened to me i didn't know the PAGER trick, so i had to rely on another PC to discover the partition number to set. I believe that this problem should not be workarounded by Debian or at build time, but should be handled upstream, checking the program existence and providing fallbacks. In the meantime, how about enforcing a dependency on less and include the latter in debian-installer? Or patching the source code to use more rather than less?
