Today's lintian will hint you into making your package compliant with the current standards, but what matters for an (old)stable upload is the state of affairs back then. Of course, if some errors only spotted by a current lintian actually apply to the package you're uploading to (old)stable, then it makes sense to consider a (targeted) fix. KiBi.
