The files that you have been editing are not the source code; they are
more like the equivalent of a compiled binary. The next release of
game-data-packager will add comments to these files to make it clearer
that they are not intended to be edited.

The editable files are data/*.yaml in the game-data-packager source code,
and I've added a feature for the next release of game-data-packager so
it will load those files if placed in the same directory as vfs.zip.

Where did you get this copy of Doom 3 BFG Edition? When there are
differences between versions we try to support all of them, installing
all the available files if we are not sure whether they are required or
not, and we try to keep track of all the available versions (and who
can test them). I believe the current YAML data came from Alexandre's
Steam copy. (I don't have the BFG Edition myself.)

For instance, is it from Steam or some other online service, or from
CD/DVD/other installation media, or something else? Which country was
it purchased in? Who was the publisher? Is it the original release, or
some re-release (perhaps under a budget brand) with patches incorporated?

The mention of modifying the SHA sums for ./base/strings/english.lang
surprises me: if you have a different version of that file, I would have
expected that you would also need to modify md5sums in the "groups".
Please run
    game-data-packager make-template
/usr/share/games/doom3bfg/base/strings/english.lang
(correcting the path if necessary) and send its output to the bug address,
<862...@bugs.debian.org>, to confirm what file you have.

Thanks,
