I used the snapshots service to get the old version.

I put the following line in /etc/apt/sources.list.d/snapshots.list :

    deb [signed-by=/usr/share/keyrings/debian-archive-keyring.gpg] 
http://snapshot.debian.org/archive/debian/20170806/ sid main

then i did:

    apt update
    apt install thunderbird=1:52.2.1-4

This will stop working smoothly once the (now old) signature on the
snapshotted apt archive expires.

Please remember to remove the snapshot archive from your list of sources
when you're done!
